If the waves of the Indian Ocean are calling your name Lamu Island is the perfect place for you

Boat Trips

If you want a truly Lamunian experience hop on a dhow for the day to explore the channels or go for a snorkel. For a shorter trip board in the late afternoon for a spectacular sunset over the Indian Ocean.

Dhow’s with their lateen sails are the traditional method of transport in the archipelago. While sailing on one of these hand-crafted boats you’ll be transported back in time. Here, the art of sailing is passed down through generations and the baharia (crew) on board are truly connected to the ocean they sail on, after all for most of them the channels of the archipelago are their playground!

The following trips can be arranged for you either for sail either by traditional dhow or for those in a hurry speed boats are also available.

Trust us when we say the only way to experience the sunset is by sailing!  It’s a truly romantic setting but also great for celebratory and relaxed trips. Watch the sunset over the Indian Ocean while you enjoy local Swahili snacks and favourite tipple.

Enjoy a cruise through the narrow mangrove channel towards Manda Toto ‘Baby Manda’. You’ll enjoy snorkelling at the protected reefs between Manda and Pate Island. Then stop off for lunch at the island to enjoy a spot of lunch freshly cooked on board the dhow!

Heading out of the mouth of the channel and into the open sea towards the rocky outcrop of Kinyika will feel like a real adventure! Kinyika has some of the most diverse and exciting underwater life in the archipelago for a real snorkelling expedition.

Sail around Lamu island passing the smaller villages of Matondoni and Kipungani then jump in for a swim and explore the south tip of the island. Our baharia (crew) will cook up a fresh BBQ for you to enjoy on board.

If you would like to try your hand at catching a meal we can arrange deep-sea fishing trips or try hand-line fishing with the local fishermen in the channel.

There are some wonderful overnight trips, to Manda Toto or up to Kiwayu Island. Either  sleep on board the dhow under the stars or book some of the  makutied accommodations. Our friendly captain will be able to customise the best trip for you!
